Mathew van Velsen is a Registered Psychologist and a director of Telehealth Psychology Australia (THPA), an online practice that sees children and adults anywhere in Australia by secure video.
Mathew works with people experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, ADHD, grief and loss, sleep difficulties, stress and burnout, behavioural issues, and the psychological side of work injury and return to work, and he has a particular interest in men's mental health. Before THPA he worked across private practice, educational settings and support services, including with NDIS participants and their families.
Mathew holds a Bachelor of Psychology / Bachelor of Business, Honours in Psychology, a Master of Professional Psychology and a Master of Clinical Psychology, all from Bond University. He is working toward the Clinical Psychology area of practice endorsement as a Clinical registrar.
Therapy works best when it is practical, collaborative and built on trust. Mathew aims to understand each person's circumstances first, then work with them on strategies that fit their own life, their goals and the pace that suits them. Seeing clients by video means people in regional areas, on shift work or with caring responsibilities can see the same psychologist every session without travelling.
Mathew holds general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (AHPRA) and takes part in regular clinical supervision and peer consultation as a Clinical registrar. Sessions run for 50 minutes over a secure telehealth platform, with the same psychologist each time. With your consent, Mathew keeps your GP informed, including review letters under Medicare's Better Access initiative.
Mathew draws on evidence-based approaches including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), DBT skills, schema therapy and behaviour therapy, chosen to suit each person rather than applied to everyone the same way. He is trained in the functions of behaviour and positive behaviour support principles, which he uses within therapy. (Telehealth Psychology Australia is not a registered NDIS behaviour support provider and does not write behaviour support plans.) Individual results vary.
