Dr Liz Buikstra is a registered psychologist with more than 25 years of experience across psychological practice, research, and project management. She has a special interest in working with adults experiencing trauma, workplace stress, burnout, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties, with particular expertise in supporting emergency service personnel and people living in rural and regional Australia.
My therapeutic philosophy is grounded in compassionate, trauma‑informed, and evidence‑based care. I believe that meaningful change occurs when clients feel safe, understood, and respected within a collaborative therapeutic relationship. I recognise the profound impact of trauma, stress, and adversity across the lifespan and tailor therapy to each individual’s unique history, strengths, and goals.
Drawing on extensive experience across clinical, organisational, and rural and remote settings, I integrate approaches such as EMDR, CBT, and emotion regulation strategies to support recovery, resilience, and sustainable wellbeing. I work from a holistic perspective, acknowledging the interplay between psychological, physical, social, and occupational factors, and I prioritise practical, client‑centred interventions that support both healing and growth.
I am committed to the delivery of high‑quality, ethical, and evidence‑based psychological services. Quality provision is underpinned by careful assessment, individualised treatment planning, and the use of clinically validated interventions tailored to each client’s needs, context, and goals. Practice is guided by trauma‑informed principles, professional standards, and ongoing reflective practice, with a strong emphasis on client safety, collaboration, and measurable outcomes. I prioritise continuous professional development, clinical governance, and accountability to ensure care remains responsive, culturally appropriate, and of the highest standard across diverse clinical and service settings.
My therapeutic approach combines practical techniques and psychological education to help you navigate your mental health journey. Depending on your needs, I will draw on a range of evidence-based approaches, including:
